About Measure O
In a significant move to support community services, Isla Vista voters approved Measure O on March 1, 2017. This measure was overwhelmingly passed by an 80% to 20% margin. Measure O introduces a special tax structure, charging $29 per bedroom annually to landlords for residential properties and $0.72 per square foot annually for non-residential properties. This tax is expected to generate approximately $250,000 per year, totaling around $2.5 million over the ten-year lifespan of the measure. The funds raised will be used to support the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District’s 50 acres of parks and facilities, as well as various community programs. Specific projects include updating existing facilities, improving park lighting, and creating recycled water infrastructure. The district previously had a similar tax that expired during the 2015-2016 school year. Measure O is essentially a continuation of this tax, ensuring that many property owners will continue to pay similar amounts as in previous years, minimizing the impact on Isla Vista rental rates.

Isla Vista Mural Project – The mural project fosters a vibrant and inclusive community in Isla Vista through artistic and cultural initiatives. IVRPD utilizes funds allocated by Measure O to collaborate with the Public Art Program of the Santa Barbara County Arts Fund. This partnership supports artists by providing them with $500 in material costs and a $1500 stipend to design a mural to be displayed in Little Acorn Park.

Waste Receptacle Project – The IVRPD recently completed a waste receptacle project aimed at enhancing the cleanliness and aesthetics of local parks. Utilizing Measure O funding, this project involved replacing outdated trash cans with new, robust metal receptacles that are designed to be more resilient to the elements. These upgraded receptacles not only offer increased durability but also contribute to a revitalized and more inviting appearance for the parks.
