ISLA VISTA, Calif. – The traditions of Día de Los Muertos were on display at Estero Park in Isla Vista on the Nov. 1.
Isla Vista Recreation and Park District invited people to enjoy a full schedule of free entertainment that included Folklórico storytelling, Mariachi Mexicanisimo, a Loteria with prizes and an indigenous performance by Grupo Tolteca Izcalotl.
“People think Isla Vista is just a college town we have a lot of families with little kids,” said the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District Assistant General Manager Luis Valerio, “It is great to provide an event for them to celebrate their culture celebrate the lives of their loves one.”
They also dined on tamales, pan dulce and more.
Guests brought photos to add to community ofrendas.
They will be on display through Friday.
One included a table full of photos of famous singers, actors, artists and athletes.
Participants said ofrendas guide the spirits of the deceased back to their living loved ones for a brief visit.
Ofrendas often include favorite foods, drinks and treats that symbolize remembrance.
Some had bowls of Halloween candy and Cokes.
Marigolds decorated the outside the St. George Community Center.
The flower’s sweet fragrance is said to help the dead make their way back home during the celebration.
The Recreation and Park District staff said Measure O money helped them cover some of the costs.
